a family exchange | scottsdale family portraits

April 23rd, 2009 , Posted in portraits

So a few months ago I had my photo taken for my marketing (and on my blog, website…pretty much everywhere) by Marisa from This is Life Photography. She did an amazing job and I returned the favor with a family session. So we went to the Scottsdale Civic Center to the LOVE statue and took some family photos. Enjoy!

I did a promotion a few months ago with Arizona Foothills Magazine for a free family portrait session and a bonus print. We finally got together a few weeks ago for their family portraits! We went to the Scottsdale Civic Center, one of my favorite places to shoot, for their session around the LOVE sculpture. Enjoy the photos!

One of my friends wanted to do some family Easter portraits for her and I was more than happy to oblidge! Heidi’s family is so adorable! Her little man was a bit shy during the session but that happens most times! So enjoy the Easter celebrations this weekend all!

vendor spotlight | scottsdale wedding photographer

April 6th, 2009 , Posted in custom products, portraits, promotion, weddings

I promised weekly vendor spotlights and here is the first of many! I hope you enjoy this post from Blue Cake Co. Recently we celebrated Estevo’s thirty-something birthday and we had a Cardinal’s themed party. It was great because he has been talking about missing hanging out with our friends and firing up the grill before a game. So we threw him a tailgaiting party and it was perfect! To top off the night I got a Cardinal’s helmet cake! And I knew the perfect people to make it.

I met Blue Cake Co. at a local wedding vendor charity night. I thought their cakes were so cute and well made! So when we thought of the cake idea…I knew who to call! So here is my Q&A with Emily:

How long have you been designing cakes? We have been designing cakes for about 5 years, up until the last two it was just for fun.  After that point, things really started to take off. What got you interested in starting your business? I love what I do, why not have it be my career.  Also, there wasn’t any cakeries in the valley that produced the same novelty type cakes that we make so many of.  We saw an opportunity in the Phoenix area to offer something that wasn’t offered at very many other cakeries.

What do you feel sets you apart from other cake designers in the wedding industry? We try to be really unique in our designs, offering more non traditional style wedding cakes and novelty cakes.

What are you most favorite kinds of cakes to make? What types of designs do you love? I love making wedding cakes or anything humorous.   Wedding cakes are fun because of the gorgeous end result and funny cakes are the best because they always produce a laugh from the client in the end.  There is no better satisfaction than being able to make the client visibly happy.

What do you enjoy most about working in the wedding industry? I enjoy the creativity of the brides.  They all have a very unique idea of what they want and what fits their style.  I enjoy creating their unique vision.

When meeting with brides who don’t know much about cakes, what is the biggest tip you find yourself giving them? I find myself always explaining what fondant is.  People are sort of confused at first, but then I explain that it’s like a tasty marshmallow pillow covering their cake.

What are things brides should be thinking about before meeting with you? They should nail down a budget, and be thinking about what type of design they would like.  Pictures are a big help!

What current trend in wedding cakes do you most like personally? I love the trend toward brighter colors rather than traditional white.  Wedding cakes are only traditionally white because of the ingredients used to make them.  When the tradition began, food dye was not used in the same ways that it is now.

Any fun-facts that we should really know that would contribute even more to your coolness? We are family owned and operated, and we will make ABSOLUTELY anything.

Here are the photos of the helmet: (apologize for the photos, took with a point and shoot)
